Short Story Writing Competition

Dear Key Stage  Two children and parents

As you know, children in Key Stage 2 have been working very hard on their writing this half term. Year 3 have written some fantastic myths and legends and Year 4 have been working on their own Marvellous Medicine stories.

You may have also heard that Radio 2 are running their “500 words competition “ again this year.  The aim is to write a short story, less than 500 words long. You have to be under 13 to enter and the story can be about anything you like.

Because of all the great writing in Key Stage 2 this half term we are inviting Year 3 and 4 to enter the competition as their homework for half term week.

To enter you need to submit your entry at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/500words/2012/submit-your-story/ and a grown up will need to give you permission to enter.

Alternatively you can send your entry to Mrs Lillico on lucy.lillico@sky.com and she will enter it into the competition for you. The deadline date is March 1st (World Book Day)  but please send it to Mrs Lillico well before then if you want her to enter it for you!

The website is worth looking at as it has lots of great tips from famous authors, as well as information about past winners and events.  Good luck and have a lovely half term holiday!

Tips about what and how to write your entry:

• It might sound funny, but do write for yourself rather than just to try and win the competition.  A great story is one that you want to read and write!
• Think about what kind of story you like reading and writing – adventure, mystery, funny story, sad story  or maybe a myth? 
• Think about how you will plan your story. You don’t need to spend ages planning though.
•  Don’t be afraid to try a couple of ideas out first until you get stuck on one you really like.
•  Try to show what your characters are like through their actions and what they say.
•  Do try to help show how your character is feeling too – it helps to draw the reader in to your story.
•  It doesn’t have to be real, but it has to feel real when you read it – we have to believe in the characters  and the story a little bit when we are reading it. Don’t get too crazy!
•  Read lots of books, listen to music, watch a film, go for a walk – all good ways to help you get thinking and inspired.
•  Have fun and be proud of your writing!

The Centre for Life Planetarium will visit school on Thursday 22 February and take us on another wordly, star gazing adventure.

Dear Parents

I am delighted to inform you that Wylam First School has successfuly been accepted as a member of London 2012′s UK-wide reward and recognition scheme, the Get Set network.

Get Set (london2012.com/getset) is the official London 2012 education programme, and through this programme, our pupils have begun learning about the Games and the Olympic and Paralympic Values.

Through the programme, we will be doing work linked to London 2012 and the Olympic and Paralympic Values such as holding our own Opening Ceremony to celebrate all the different countries taking part in the games and of course, our own special Olympic themed Sports Day.

We have now been recognised by the London 2012 Organising Committee as a school that is demonstrating its copmmitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values, and have become a member of the Get Set network.

This means that we:

• have the right to use the London 2012 education logo – look out for this on our school sign, letterhead and website
• will receive a plaque and certificate to show we are part of the London  2012 Family
• and we will be in with a chance of winning visits from athletes and the London 2012 mascots!

Over the coming months, we at Wylam First School will be getting ready for London 2012 by linking more work to the Games and ensuring that our pupils feel that they are a part of this once-in-a-lifetime event.

We are really excited about this fantastic opportunity and look forward to updating you further on our work in the coming months.

Lucy Lillico

The Community & Environmental Health Rural Team has contacted school regarding inconsiderate parking around Hedley Road and Parsons Road.

Could I please ask parents who are dropping off or picking up their children to park sensibly and consider local residents access.  The car park by the war memorial can be used free of charge if you apply to the council for a parking permit.  If interested to apply for a permit, please contact Emma Irving on 01434 652395.
