As is fitting for a Community Orchard Panel the information board was designed with the support and input of local people. The main inspiration and creative lead was Steve Pardue from Differentia Design, a talented local artist Steve produced initial ideas and worked through some sketches as to how the panel might look. Since the Orchard is on the school grounds of Wylam First School Steve saw an opportunity to enhance the project by getting the children involved.
After some early work with the children he suggested we brought in David Gross – a wood carver – to work with Year 4. The children had worked with David previously to produce a carved memory seat.
David was excited to be involved and after exploring images with the children he did some preparatory work on the panels and then let them begin the carving work themselves.
Meanwhile Steve Pardue worked with Year 2 and involved the children in producing poems and pictures to go on the panel itself. The result is a blend of designed work and children’s own work.
We would like to thank Steve for his enthusiasm and determination without which this project would never have happened. The children are very proud of their work and the panel now stands at the entrance to the Community Orchard.
