The Year 2 curriculum is taught through 6 half termly topics:

Welcome back to the 2nd half of the Autumn Term and our topic, ‘Flash, Bang, Sparkle!’ Mrs McHarg, our trainee teacher from Northumbria University will be working with the class, Mrs Johnston and myself over the next six weeks. She will be involved in some of the teaching and learning across the range of subjects.
The teaching and learning in this topic will include:
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
In Science the children will be learning about Electricity. We will be identifying light sources and appliances which use electricity. We will make simple electrical circuits and carry out investigations .
In History the children will be learning about Guy Fawkes and why we celebrate Bonfire Night. The children will also find out about the ‘Great Fire of London’, how, when and why it happened. They will look at secondary sources of evidence from the past.
Work in ICT will be cross curricular and the children will use ICT as a tool to find things out in science and history, as well as editing work to be word processed.
In Geography we will be identifying places around the world and finding them on a map through our ‘Where in the world is Barnaby Bear?’ theme. We will look at the features of places including the weather and how to get there.
In R.E. we will be learning about some of the main events in Jesus’ life. We will explore a range of religious stories and explore their meaning. The children will look at the key events in the Christmas story.
Problem Solving, Number and Reasoning
The children will –
- Use units of time – hours in a day, days in a week
- Use units of time – months in a year, seasons in a year
- Use the names of common 2D shapes and describe their features
- To begin to recognise line symmetry and make symmetrical patterns
- Mental calculations and informal written calculations
- To know doubles for numbers up to 15 and corresponding halves
- To begin to derive doubles of multiples of 5 up to 100 and corresponding halves
- To find totals of sets of coins, relate to adding three or more numbers
- To give change using smaller coins up to £2
Communication, Language and Literacy
In Literacy we will be looking at recounts and writing a diary using Bonfire Night and The Great Fire of London as a focus for writing. Additionally we will look at explanation texts -
- identifying key words
- using an index
- putting words into alphabetical order
- create a glossary
- Produce simple flow charts or diagrams to explain a process.
The children will take part in regular handwriting sessions twice weekly, as well as daily phonic sessions to improve and develop spelling strategies.
The children will be heard read by a teacher/teaching assistant at least once a week. Individual home reading books can be exchanged any day by the children themselves from their appropriate box as and when they complete books.
In Art and Design the work will be based on looking at the work of a famous artist, William Turner.
In music we will be learning songs for our Key Stage 1 Christmas production – ‘Are We Nearly There Yet’
In P.E. the focus will be on gymnastics and using apparatus. The children will perform basic gymnastics actions with control and coordination. They will create and perform a short sequence using floor and apparatus. The daily ‘Activate’ program will continue.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
The focus will be on cooperation and valuing diversity –
- Developing social skills of friendship
- Working well together in a group
- Understanding and managing anger
- Resolving conflict

Homework - Given out on a Thursday to be completed and returned to school the following Tuesday.
Spellings – Given out on a Thursday to be practiced and returned to school the following Thursday for a spelling testing.
